Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Had their campaign falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he publicly stated that the management had not mentioned the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Speculation that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unexpected Return

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio this year. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, during the summer break, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The registration embargo necessitated a reconsideration. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom only to bench him consistently."

Finding His True Position

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself most of that campaign as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
